Board Member Spotlight: Meet Andy Wurtzel

Published August 18, 2015

In keeping with HoG’s tradition of always “being on the lookout” for individuals with a particular skill or educational background who would be a benefit to our Board of Directors and, ultimately, the bleeding disorder community, I’m pleased to introduce you to Andy Wurtzel, the latest addition to HoG’s Board of Directors.

Andy is currently the Administrator of Clinic Operations of the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center, Emory Health Care. They see about 700 patients each day, have five different locations and are served by a staff of over 50 physicians and 300 employees. They also treat individuals with hemophilia; some of whom not only attend Emory HTCs but also are clients of Hemophilia of Georgia. Now, does that or does that not make for a great addition to our Board of Directors?

Andy and his wife Lauren, an MD in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who specializes in hospital acquired infections, have two children: Zoey, who is 2 years old and Sammy who is 2 months old. Now, if I were a betting woman (and although it’s a long time coming), I’d bet that it’s “just possible” that their two children may end up with careers in the medical arena (but that’s just a guess….).

The last bit of information I’d like to share with you about Andy is that in the short time he’s been with HoG (since January 2015) he has already displayed a sincere interest and commitment to us. How? By taking the time out of his busy work schedule and home life (remember, they have a new baby) to drive to Camp Wannaklot to visit and have dinner with our campers one hot day this past July!

Andy, who is from New Haven, Connecticut met Lauren while they both were attending George Washington University. He received his MBA in Health Care Management from Boston University. Andy is an avid runner and former competitive ultimate Frisbee player.  Now didn’t I tell you we have a diverse Board of Directors?
