Horizons in Hemophilia, Winter 2009

HoG often receives calls from clients asking about services that we provide or wondering who to call for medical advice for treatment of bleeding episodes. Below is a table to help with some of the confusion:

Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC)
Emory/Egleston, MCG, Backus, CHOA at Scottish Rite

Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG)

• Gives medical advice for treatment
• Schedules clinic appointments
• Confirms diagnosis for schools
• Gives orders for factor treatment
• Hematologist or hemophilia nurse coordinators are available to give specific treatment advice or treatment
• Provides factor prescriptions
• Can make referrals to other doctors for consultation
• Can provide hospital care
• HTC social worker can help clients with financial and insurance issues and also help them find transportation to clinic.

• Can give general advice
• Nurses and social workers attend clinic
• Nurses and social workers can provide school and medical in-services about bleeding disorders
• Nurses and social workers can help with IEP
• Nurses can help train family members to do home infusion
• Consults with HTC nurses and doctors for follow-up in the home or community
• Has a nonprofit pharmacy which supplies factor when a prescription is on file and the family or client calls or orders factor online, provided that the client’s insurance plan allows use of the HoG pharmacy
• Does not make medical referrals
• HoG is a nonprofit organization located in Atlanta; not a medical facility
• HoG social workers can help find resources for financial issues and offer community outreach. They can assist with transportation to clinic and insurance concerns.
