Ruth with NHF Award
Ruth Brown

Hemophilia of Georgia received three awards at the National Hemophilia Foundation annual meeting in November in Denver.

Ruth Brown, HoG Vice President of Programs, received the prestigious Loras Goedken Outstanding Leadership Service Award. This award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding efforts to educate and bring about awareness of bleeding and clotting disorders. Ruth was recognized for her dedication and commitment to helping educate others both within the bleeding disorder community and among the general population by increasing awareness and understanding. Ruth has been on staff with Hemophilia of Georgia for almost twenty years and was responsible for the development of The Hemophilia Handbook and the Protocols for the Treatment of Hemophilia and Von Willebrand Disease. She has also been instrumental in the growth and development of the hemophilia treatment centers in Georgia.

Hemophilia of Georgia's latest handbook, The VWD & Platelet Disorders Handbook, received an Award of Distinction for Health Education Programs. This award recognizes effective, creative programs in health education and prevention targeting women, parents and families, adults or young adults in the bleeding and clotting disorders community. Published by HoG in December 2007, The VWD & Platelet Disorder Handbook is a comprehensive, easy-to-read resource guide covering von Willebrand Disease, Bernard-Soulier Syndrome, Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia, and Platelet Storage Pool Disorders.

Finally, the Camp Wannaklot newspaper received an Award of Distinction for Communications. This award recognizes an outstanding communications vehicle such as a newsletter, website, or video. Teen campers and counselors produced a camp newspaper during Camp Wannaklot in 2007 and 2008. The 2007 edition was entitled The Wannaklot Wannaknow, and the 2008 edition was called H2O in the Know. The teens who participated in the camp newspaper and photography dimension got a first-hand look at what is involved in newspaper production. The Wannaklot Wannaknow staff included Kayla, Kelsey, Alyssa, Christopher, Gabby, Ja'Ron, and Harley. Christopher and Harley returned to the camp newspaper dimension the next year and were assisted in creating H2O in the Know by Jessica, Austin, Jeremy, and Lamotte. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done!
