Less Volume to Infuse Advate

Published April 11, 2012

Horizons in Hemophilia, April 2012

By Leigh Carpenter, RPh, Director of Pharmacy

Baxter has introduced a 2 ml diluent volume for Advate in dosage strengths ranging from 250 to 1700 units.  The previous volume for these sizes was 5 ml.  Baxter reported that this change was developed in response to the community’s desire for a decreased volume to infuse.  The larger dosage strengths of 2000, 2500 and 3000 units will remain at 5 ml.  All dosage strengths of Advate will contain a Baxject II needleless mixing device and the new 2 ml diluent vials will also include a 25-gauge Terumo butterfly infusion set (these butterfly sets were not previously included in the 5 ml sizes).

As the Hemophilia of Georgia and Beacon pharmacies transition to these new size vials, you may continue to receive the 5 ml sizes until our inventory is depleted and Baxter begins shipping the new size diluent vials.  Clinical studies performed by Baxter demonstrated the same dose of Advate reconstituted in either diluent volume resulted in similar factor VIII levels in the body.  If you have any questions about Advate or any other factor product, please contact the pharmacy or your Hemophilia Treatment Center.
