Nurse Profile: Penny Kumpf

April 2008, Submitted to Atlanta Hospital News

Penny Kumpf, RN, von Willebrand Disease Community Outreach Nurse, Hemophilia of Georgia

Throughout her 25-year nursing career, Penny Kumpf has focused on educating patients and other nurses. Penny's dedication to education and first-hand knowledge of the effects of bleeding disorders make her passionate about her work.

As von Willebrand Disease Community Outreach Nurse for Hemophilia of Georgia, she travels throughout the state to help women understand the symptoms of von Willebrand Disease (VWD) and to encourage women who have these symptoms to visit a Hemophilia Treatment Center for diagnosis. VWD is the most common bleeding disorder and affects 1 to 2 percent of the population. However, it frequently takes years from the onset of symptoms until diagnosis. According to Penny, "women who have excessive bleeding need to know they might have a bleeding disorder."

Penny and the other Hemophilia of Georgia Outreach Nurses frequently make educational in-service presentations at physicians' offices and hospitals and attend health fairs and community events to educate the public about bleeding disorders. Hemophilia of Georgia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services and support for Georgians who have hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease, and other inherited bleeding disorders.

Please contact Penny at pakumpf@hog.org or (770) 518-8272 to schedule an in-service or to learn more about von Willebrand Disease.
