Roswell High School Student Named Sprint Youth Community Champion

Roswell High School sophomore Austin Shaw was recognized as a Youth Community Champion by the Sprint Foundation at an awards ceremony on Monday, November 2, 2009. The Sprint Foundation awarded a $2500 grant to the non-profit organization of his choice, Hemophilia of Georgia.
The Sprint Community Champions Program honors outstanding Atlanta-area residents who have made a positive impact on the community. For his recent Boy Scout Eagle project Shaw built a bocce court, horseshoe pits and four-square courts at Camp Twin Lakes, a camp facility for children who have serious illnesses, disabilities, and challenges. Camp Wannaklot, Hemophilia of Georgia’s camp for children and teens who have inherited bleeding disorders, is held at Camp Twin Lakes every year. A plaque now hangs at Camp Twin Lakes to honor Shaw’s contribution to the camp’s facilities.
Having completed this project, which took many hours of planning and fundraising and a full weekend to build, Austin was granted the rank of Eagle Scout on August 28, 2008. In addition to his involvement with the Boy Scouts, Shaw is also active in his church and in programs supporting foster children.
“We are so pleased that Austin chose Hemophilia of Georgia as the recipient of this grant. Austin has been an invaluable volunteer at Camp Wannaklot and we are so fortunate to have him as a part of our organization. I wish we had ten more Austins,” commented CEO Trish Dominic. “We are so very proud of him and his accomplishments."
