Over MLK Weekend, 22 HoG teens and 12 volunteers/staff participated in a fun-filled retreat in Gatlinburg, TN. One of the most memorable experiences was the Titanic Museum. Teens received a guided tour and learned all about the artifacts from the ship, its passengers, and the night it hit an iceberg. Many of the teens also fearlessly stepped outside their comfort zone by riding a SkyLift to Anakeesta and experiencing breathtaking views of the Great Smokey Mountains on the SkyBridge.

While the group had tons of fun, Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG) also provided them with transition education. The group participated in an interactive, two-hour, education workshop on college readiness and adulting skills. The workshop was facilitated by GUIDE, Inc., an organization that focus on improving community conditions by utilizing collaborations, promoting position youth development, delivering specialized training and resources, and preventing substance use and abuse. GUIDE discussed the transition from high school to college that included self-management, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and core values to prepare for both academic and real-word successful experiences. Additionally, teens received first aid education from HoG Director of Nursing, Jennifer Crabbe and Outreach Nurse, Karen Clark. Teens learned the essentials supplies and equipment for a first aid kit and how to use to give immediate treatment when needed. Also, teens assembled and decorated their own emergency first aid kit.

Teens concluded the weekend by providing HoG staff feedback about their experiences. They loved getting to connect with their peers in the HoG community, trying new experiences, and gaining valuable education they can carry with them for the future.
