Step 23: Check for a blood return

Guidelines:

  • Check for a blood return after every 5 to 10 cc of factor you inject.
  • Pull back slowly on the plunger of the syringe.  Blood will enter the tubing if you are still in the vein.
  • If there is no blood return, remove the needle and press down on the site.  Try again at another site with a new needle.  Use the factor as soon as possible.  Factor that has been mixed up should not sit for hours before infusing.  When in doubt, check with your HTC.

Caution: Do not pull back on the plunger so much that the blood comes back into the syringe.
