AIDS and HIV Infection

AIDS and HIVAIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.  It is caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).  From 1978 to 1985, many people with hemophilia were infected with HIV because they received blood or factor that contained the virus.

Blood donors are now screened and donated blood is now tested for HIV.  The companies that make factor concentrate also use methods to remove HIV from the factor.  These steps to protect blood products began in the mid 1980s.

Everyone needs to know the facts about HIV infection and AIDS so they can protect themselves and others.  Many advances have been made in the treatment of AIDS.  People are staying well, living longer, and having a better quality of life.  You can learn the about HIV infection through the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) including ways to prevent spreading or getting the virus.
