Labor Day Holiday

The Hemophilia of Georgia office, pharmacy, and Beacon Pharmacy will close at 12:00 noon on Friday, September 2 and remain closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day.  Please make sure you have enough factor on hand for the holiday weekend.

Camp Wannaklot 2011camp 2011 2 boys

Camp Wannaklot was great as always. This year, 150 campers had a wonderful time at Camp Wannaklot.  A total of 98 terrific volunteers served as counselors, worked in the med lodge, or helped get the campers to and from camp.  Read more and view camp photos.

Danny C. Named Firefighter of the YearDanny

HoG client and volunteer Danny C. was recently named Firefighter of the Year by the Ben Hill Volunteer Fire Department.  Each year the 30 members of the Ben Hill Fire Department vote on one person as Firefighter of the Year and the award is presented at a banquet.  Danny said he was very surprised when his name was called at the banquet in March of this year.  He was told that he was selected because he gave the greatest effort over the past year. 29th Annual Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament

Hemophilia of Georgia will host the 29th annual Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the beautiful Château Élan Winery & Resort in Braselton, Georgia.  The honorary co-chairs for this year’s tournament are Bill Acree of the Atlanta Braves and Steve Sitton from AT&T.   Several Atlanta Braves celebrities are expected to attend the tournament. Genome “Editing” Corrects Hemophilia B in Mice

Researchers at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) used genome editing, a gene therapy method, to treat hemophilia in mice. This is the first time genome editing has been successfully done on study animals with clinically relevant results. The study was led by Katherine A. High, MD, director of CHOP’s Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics. She is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. High has been conducting hemophilia gene therapy clinical trials for more than a decade. Results of the study were published in the online version of Nature on June 26. Read more.

HoG Nurses Available for School In-Service Presentations

HoG nurses offer school in-services because it is important that teachers and school officials feel comfortable knowing what to do for a bleeding problem, instead of calling 911 for a minor problem or, at the other extreme, failing to let parents know about important concerns about their child’s health.
