Unsung Heroes: A Tribute to Social Workers

By Robert Gillespie, Vice President of Programs

Published March 13, 2020

March is national social work month. It is part of our mission at Hemophilia of Georgia to help those with inherited bleeding disorders live the fullest life possible. Social work is critical to achieving that. We provide social work services to everyone we serve.

Our social workers assess our patients’ needs and assist them in meeting those needs directly or by referring them to another community organization. The goal is to remove barriers and limit the effects of bleeding disorders on our clients’ everyday life.

Our social workers can:

  • Provide education about health insurance including how to obtain insurance and programs that can assist with premium payments
  • Provide education about our social support programs including: Preventive Dental, Educational Success, and Professional Development
  • Referral to community resources for financial or social support
  • Suggest skills to use for those experiencing needle aversion
  • Assist young adults with the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare
  • Identify and remove barriers to ensure people use factor as prescribed

Social workers are often the unsung heroes of health care. We want to make sure they get the attention they deserve. Throughout March, we will be highlighting our social workers on social media. You can also read more about each of them in our Social Work Month Spotlights on our blog:
