By Tracy Heath, Director of Communications  on March 3, 2020

Sobel at WorkSocial Work Month takes place throughout March. To honor our own social workers and highlight what they do, we are featuring a quick Q&A with each of our social workers. This week, we are featuring Jacob Sobel.

Q: Why did you get into social work?

A: I am a third generation Master of Social Work (MSW). My papa, Leonard Cohen, received his MSW from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to become the Executive Director of Jewish Family and Career Services in Atlanta for many years. My amazing mother, Deborah Cohen, LCSW, currently has her own private practice in the Lawrenceville, GA area. One would not be incorrect in saying the work I do is truly in my blood!

Q: How long have you beed doing social work?

A: Coming up on 4 years.

Q: What do you enjoy most or what are you most proud of in your role at HoG?

A: I always found people and their stories deeply intriguing. At HoG, there is nothing I enjoy or embrace more than connecting with client’s on an emotional level and entering their world to assistance them through their journey as a person who is diagnosed with a bleeding disorder.

Q: What do you think is the most important contribution of social workers to the inherited bleeding disorders community? What about as a whole – what is the most important contribution of social workers overall (beyond the inherited bleeding disorders community)?

A: As a HoG social worker, there is nothing more important than connecting with client’s on an emotional level and entering their world to assistance them with living their best life possible as a person who is diagnosed with a bleeding disorder.

“One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”
