Hemophilia of Georgia Offers Comprehensive Services
Our mission statement at Hemophilia of Georgia states that our agency exists so that people in Georgia affected by bleeding disorders can live as normally and productively as possible. Our belief that “it takes more than medicine” to achieve this mission is the foundation upon which we have built our extensive array of support services. We believe that the best approach is a comprehensive one; an approach which offers support to help meet every challenge facing the bleeding disorder community.
Pharmacy Services – In addition to substantial cost savings we offer:
- A home delivery program which distributes infusion supplies, factor and clotting medications
- A state assistance program to provide factor for those not eligible for insurance coverage (based on financial need)
- A product recall procedure for notifying clients when a product is recalled by the manufacturer
- Complete insurance service, which includes filing of insurance, Medicare and Medicaid claims, and assistance with other insurance issues.
Outreach Nursing Services – Our nurses are a resource for support and education, available at no cost to our Georgia clients. Services offered include:
- Presentations on bleeding disorders for schools, day care centers, and medical professionals
- Genetic counseling and information about carrier testing
- Home infusion training and follow-up for interested families
- Information on treatments and research protocols for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis
- Distribution of helmets, knee pads and elbow pads to clients through the age of 17
- Distribution of insulated travel kits and supply boxes
- Confidential HIV counseling and testing for clients, partners or spouses, and family members.
Social Support Services – We have social workers on staff to assist you with a variety of personal and financial issues, including:
- Funds to purchase Medic Alert bracelets, based on financial need
- Resources to help with the expense of a health insurance policy, based on financial need
- Assistance with some clinic charges not covered by insurance or Medicaid, based on financial need
- Help with transportation and/or lodging for clinic visits, based on financial need
- Scholarships for qualified clients who wish to further their education after high school
- Consumer counseling, advocacy and billing research for insurance claims
- Career-option counseling and vocational testing referrals for interested clients
- Enrichment program providing extracurricular activities funds for children, based on financial need.
Clinic and Research Funding – We believe that comprehensive health care is critical now, even as we search for a cure. We support both of these goals through:
- Financial funding for the comprehensive care of bleeding disorders in adults and children, as well the purchase of equipment and provision of staff and educational materials for clinics at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, Emory University Hospital, Backus Children’s Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia
- Funding of research for hemophilia and its complications
- Membership in the National Hemophilia Foundation and the World Federation of Hemophilia.
Informational Services – Providing consumers with the resources needed to make informed health care choices is part of our mission. To do this we offer:
- An assortment of literature about hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, hepatitis and HIV available free of charge to clients and other interested person
- “The Hemophilia Handbook”, a comprehensive guide to living with a bleeding disorder. This handbook, produced by HoG and available in both English and Spanish editions, is available at no cost to all clients living in Georgia.
- Guidelines for treatment of bleeding disorders for local emergency rooms and physicians
- A physician-to-physician hotline available 24 hours per day for Georgia physicians who need emergency treatment information
- An award-winning newsletter, Horizons in Hemophilia, published 3 times per year
- Informational mailings in the form of medical bulletins, advisories and updates mailed to Georgia clients
- This newly redesigned, easy to navigate web site (www.hog.org) with links to information and useful external sites.
Activities and Programs – Other families with hemophilia can be a great resource for information and support. We provide an opportunity for networking within the bleeding disorder community through a variety of programs:
- Activities for clients and their families who are interested in community advocacy and legislative issues
- Camping programs, including Camp Wannaklot, a summer camp program for young people ages 7-17, and Family Camp, an opportunity for the whole family to share the camping experience
- Activities for peer support and diverse interests – Women’s Day Out, adolescent programs, parent programs, holiday events, and other programs that address specific needs of different groups
- Volunteer opportunities are available for HoG fundraising events and programs (such as Camp Wannaklot), and on special event committees and our Board of Directors.
