Dear HoG: Can an Insurance Broker Help Me?

Published September 11, 2014

Dear HoG: I am beyond confused about all of the insurance changes, particularly since I am now self-employed and do not have the option of getting coverage through my job. I have heard that an insurance broker might be able to help me sort through everything. How can I find one?

Dear Confused: An insurance broker can definitely give you support in choosing your next health insurance plan. You have the option of finding your own broker or calling your Hemophilia of Georgia social worker for a referral to someone who is familiar with the specific needs of people who have bleeding disorders. For those not familiar with this resource, an insurance broker is someone with in-depth knowledge about how insurance works. Brokers are trained to be “go-betweens” in the often overwhelming world of insurance policies and providers. And sometimes they can troubleshoot if problems arise once you have your new insurance.

Brokers are bound by the ethical standards maintained by their licensing board to find the best possible plan for each client. Also, it is important to work with someone who is familiar with health insurance plans. Brokers also help people with car and home insurance, so not everyone has health care expertise.

You can find a broker yourself by seeking a referral from a friend or by researching broker reviews and ratings on the internet, or you can get a referral from HoG.

If you would like a referral from a broker known to the HoG staff, please call the main number at 770-518-8272 and ask to speak to your social worker. It is important to call as soon as possible before open enrollment. A consent form must be signed by you and faxed to HoG before the introduction can be made. The consent form can be returned to HoG by scanning and emailing it or sending by regular mail.
