Dr. Stein Appointed to Emory Chair Named in His Honor
At Hemophilia of Georgia’s 40th anniversary celebration in March 2013, CEO Trish Dominic announced that the agency had endowed the Sidney F. Stein, MD Chair in Hemophilia and Hemostasis at Emory University. On January 27, 2015, Dr. Stein was honored a second time for actually becoming the inaugural holder of the chair named for him. This means that the income from the endowment will be used to ensure that Dr. Stein has time dedicated to continue his work in the treatment of patients with bleeding disorders.
Colleagues, family members, and friends attended the reception held in Emory’s James B. Wilson Medical Education building to celebrate Dr. Stein’s being named to the chair. Dr. Christian Larsen, Dean of the School of Medicine at Emory University, gave opening remarks thanking Hemophilia of Georgia for the endowment and sharing the history of HoG’s partnership with Emory to build an outstanding bleeding disorders treatment center. Dr. Larsen recognized Dr. Stein for being an active participant from the very beginning of the development of comprehensive care for patients in Georgia.
Dr. Larsen was followed by Dr. Fadlo Khuri, Chair of the Hematology and Oncology Department, who reminded the audience that not only has Dr. Stein provided decades of care to patients with bleeding disorders but he has also served as a mentor and advisor to medical students interested in pursuing careers in hematology. Dr. Stein’s contributions to the development of medical faculty have had a lasting impact on the quality of care given to patients with bleeding disorders.
During the evening, words used to describe Dr. Stein included generous, insightful, and humble. He has been a mentor to medical students entering hematology and an advocate for patients, the Emory Hemophilia Treatment Center and Hemophilia of Georgia. The bleeding disorders community has benefited for decades from his dedication to quality medical care and we are delighted that his work will continue as he “sits” in the Sidney Stein, MD Chair in Hemophilia and Hemostasis.
