HoG Pharmacy Summer Intern From University of Georgia College of Pharmacy
Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG) is delighted to have had intern, Kelly Bazel, join us over the summer in the HoG Pharmacy as part of our commitment to strengthening the education and development of our professional workforce and potential leaders through real-world experience and mentorship.
Kelly is a rising second year Pharm.D student at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. She is from Conyers, GA and received her Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences from Auburn University in Alabama. On why Kelly chose HoG for her internship, she stated, "I wanted to expand my knowledge on bleeding disorders as it is not covered in-depth in class. Hemophilia of Georgia does so much for the bleeding disorder community, and I knew right away I wanted to be a part of the work that they do."
When asked what her favorite part of this experience was, Kelly stated, “I think the best part has been that I was fully immersed into the Hemophilia of Georgia organization. I spent most of my time in the Pharmacy taking factor orders, helping the pharmacists type prescriptions, filling orders, and performing assessments, all while learning more about different factor products and their appropriate usage. However, I was also able to learn about many other facets of the organization from participating in the Trot to Clot fundraising event and visiting Camp Wannaklot, the only camp in Georgia dedicated to children and teens with an inherited bleeding disorder. Additionally, I went on a home visit with a nurse to see a home infusion, visited an HTC on a clinic day, and went on a home visit with a social worker. I am grateful for my experience here at HoG. It has been so valuable, and I know that I am leaving with a great deal of knowledge about bleeding disorders."
Leigh Carpenter, Vice President of Pharmacy Operations at Hemophilia of Georgia, reflected on her time spent with Kelly and shared, “It has been a pleasure working with Kelly this summer! She is a bright young woman that will represent the profession well in the years ahead. I am especially proud of the educational curriculum she is obtaining from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy, my alma mater. HoG is honored to have hosted her as our inaugural summer Pharmacy Intern. We wish her much continued success in her career!
