Packaging Changes for Benefix and Xyntha

Published May 9, 2013

Horizons in Hemophilia, May 2013

By Leigh Carpenter, RPh, Director of Pharmacy
Pfizer has recently announced packaging changes for both Benefix and Xyntha.  These packaging changes include:

  • Use of 25 gauge Terumo infusion set (butterfly needle) for all sizes; replaces the 23 gauge needle for the 1000IU, 2000IU and 3000IU vials
  • Use of new brand of alcohol swab that is clearly marked “Sterile” on the package
  • Use of the Pfizer logo instead of the Wyeth logo as the manufacturer on the outer carton
  • Listing of country of origin for all packaging components on the outer carton

The change in the size of the butterfly needles may be of concern to some people.   If you prefer the 23G size, the pharmacy staff will be glad to include them in your order.  Just make sure you ask for them when placing an order. Terumo is the same brand we stock in the pharmacy.  If you have requested the 25G size in the past, it will now be included in each package.

The alcohol swabs now being marked as “Sterile” is a very welcome change to our clients, due to questions and recalls in the past.  The alcohol swabs stocked in the HoG and Beacon pharmacies are marked “Sterile” as well.  If you have any questions, please call the pharmacy!
