Horizons in Hemophilia, February 2010

By Leigh Carpenter, Chief Pharmacist

The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) received the largest humanitarian aid donation in its history during 2009 when Wyeth, now a part of Pfizer, pledged more than 40 million units of Refacto to the program. (Refacto is no longer on the market, having been replaced by Xyntha. Both are recombinant factor VIII products). Other large donations to the WFH in 2009 include Kogenate FS by Bayer and FEIBA by Baxter.

Hemophilia of Georgia received more than 15 million units of factor to distribute. Since receiving the donated factor, HoG has shipped over 9 million units of factor concentrate to 30 countries. Fed Ex International has delivered 74 separate shipments. Some of the recipient countries include: Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Kyrghyz Republic, Nepal and Tunisia. We have a world map displayed on the wall of our hallway with pins marking each country where we have sent donated factor and you can see a similar map online.

We are all very proud of the part we play in making this humanitarian aid project so successful!
