Reminders about Stimate® Nasal Spray

Published January 9, 2012

Horizons in Hemophilia, January 2012

By Leigh Carpenter, RPh, Director of Pharmacy

Stimate® nasal spray is indicated for patients with mild to moderate classic von Willebrand Disease (Type I) with factor VIII levels greater than 5% and for patients with hemophilia A with factor VIII levels greater than 5%.  The nasal spray pump comes in a 2.5ml bottle which delivers 25 doses of 150mcg.  The package insert was revised within the past year to reflect a change in storage requirements.  Stimate® can now be stored at room temperature not to exceed 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) for the period indicated by the expiration date on the label of the box.  Previously, it required storage under refrigeration.

Another important fact is to discard the nasal spray six months after the package is opened, or when the expiration date has passed, if this date is before the six months is up.  An easy way to remember when the vial was opened is to write the date on the outside of the box the first time you use it.  If you have any questions about Stimate® or any other products we carry in the HoG and Beacon pharmacies, don’t hesitate to call us.
