Hemophilia of Georgia's Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament Raises Over $300,000 for Research

The 26th annual Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament sponsored by Hemophilia of Georgia raised more than $310,000 for research for a cure for inherited bleeding disorders. Over 300 golfers participated in the tournament on October 28, 2008 at Château Élan Resort and Winery in Braselton, Georgia.
Sixty companies contributed to the success of the 26th annual tournament by serving as corporate sponsors or by providing products and services. AT&T Mobility, LLC was the tournament's Platinum Sponsor and Crown Castle International was the Gold Sponsor. Hewlett-Packard served as Official Team Prize Sponsor and provided prizes for each member of the first, second, and third-place finishing teams on each of the three golf courses at Château Élan. Silver Sponsors included Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Bayer HealthCare, CSL Behring, LLC, Goodman Networks, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Syniverse Technologies, TruePosition, Inc. and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Hemophilia of Georgia sincerely thanks all of the companies who participated in the tournament.

The Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament is co-chaired by Bill Acree of the Atlanta Braves and has been fortunate to receive tremendous support from the Braves each year. In 2006, the Ernie Johnson Award was established to honor an individual for long-standing support, leadership, and commitment to the Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament. The 2008 Ernie Johnson Award was presented to Glenn Hubbard in honor of his on-going support for the tournament and his efforts to assist Hemophilia of Georgia in raising funds to find a cure for bleeding disorders.

About Hemophilia
Hemophilia is a hereditary genetic disorder in which a person's blood is not able to clot normally. In normal blood, proteins called clotting factors work together to form a clot whenever bleeding occurs. The person with hemophilia lacks or doesn't have enough of a certain clotting factor so the blood can't make a clot. Hemophilia is a very rare disorder, affecting about 17,000 people in the United States. People with hemophilia stop bleeding by taking an injection of the clotting factor that is missing from their blood. However, the clotting factor used to treat hemophilia is very expensive. Some patients reach their lifetime insurance maximum at very young ages.
