The Mighty Sticker Club

By Karen Clark RN and Julie Hayman RN – Outreach Nursing

Published February 1, 2017

Jaylen, Keyshawn, Dylan, Timothy, Rodney, and Melvin are the newest members of the Mighty Sticker Club.  Many of the boys have attended Camp Wannaklot for several summers.  Their Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG) nurses began working with them at camp and at home to learn self-infusion.  Being around other kids with the same bleeding disorder challenged them to complete the process.

To become a member of the Mighty Sticker Club, all the boys mastered the steps of self-infusion, including mixing factor, selecting a vein, sticking themselves, infusing factor, and completing a treatment calendar.  What an accomplishment!  The boys are now self-sufficient and take full ownership of the infusion process.  They were awarded certificates and gift cards for their hard work.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors Jalen

This summer, Jaylen, age 10, attended Camp Wannaklot and began mastering self-infusion.  His HoG outreach nurse met with him at school and he demonstrated his ability to do all the steps of giving himself factor, from mixing the medication to safely injecting it into a vein.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors KeyShawn

Keyshawn, age 11, wants to attend camp someday.  When he first attempted to self-infuse, his veins wouldn’t cooperate.  With the guidance of his outreach nurse, he persevered and overcame the challenge.  He loves to play the drums and watches Drumline almost every day.  He also likes basketball, videos, and animals.  His favorite channel is Animal Planet.  He wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up.  His favorite subject is math.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors Dylan

Dylan, age 12, enjoys playing sports.  He started prophylactic treatments so he could play basketball.  He did a great job learning to self-infuse so he can give himself treatments before hitting the court.  He learned to self-infuse and was successful on his first attempt.  He continued to practice self-infusing with coaching from HoG’s outreach nurses and quickly became independent.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors Timothy

Timothy, age 12, attended Camp Wannaklot this summer and continued to practice after he got home.  He gave himself twice-weekly prophylactic infusions at home with assistance.  Timothy and his family attended our fall family camp where he demonstrated his self-infusion skills.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors Rodney

Rodney, age 13, received his award at the end of last year.  He recently attended the teen retreat where he again demonstrated his self-infusion skills.  He had a great time during the retreat and explored Chattanooga with his Camp Wannaklot friends.  He loves to sing, dance, draw, and write poetry.

The Mighty Sticker Club Honors Melvin

Last summer at camp, Melvin, age 14, demonstrated that he had mastered the art of self-infusion.  Melvin loves movies and received a gift certificate from the Movie Tavern.

Congratulations!  We are so proud of you.
