Dear HoG: Replacing Lost MedicAlert® Jewelry

Published April 9, 2013

Dear HoG: I am a little confused about whether Hemophilia of Georgia can help with more than one MedicAlert® bracelet. My daughter lost hers. HoG bought the first one for us about two years ago. Will you pay for a replacement?
--The mom of an active girl.

Dear Mom: Thanks for asking about this. MedicAlert® jewelry is so important, as you know, and can save lives! When a child or adult can’t speak for himself or herself, the MedicAlert® does the talking to emergency personnel. But it needs to be worn and not attached to a car mirror, backpack, purse or anything else that can become separated from a person during an accident or other crisis.

Your HoG nurse and social worker want to make sure you know how to replace this valuable piece of jewelry. It is one of the most important things we discuss with our clients, particularly teens who are becoming more independent.  HoG’s current policy is to pay only for the first MedicAlert® bracelet or necklace. However, financial hardships should not get in the way, so please call HoG and ask for help if you cannot afford a replacement. Replacements are often less expensive than people think. You can first check out the cost by calling MedicAlert® at 1-888-633-4298 or visiting their website.
