Dear HoG: Smart 911

Horizons in Hemophilia, August 2012

Dear HoG:
I have heard about a service called “Smart911” that allows me to store my medical information with local emergency departments so that they will automatically know that I have a bleeding disorder the minute I dial 9-1-1. Should I sign up?
 --Curious

Dear Curious:
Good question! When you dial 9-1-1, the emergency operator does not automatically receive any information about you except your phone number and your general location. It is then up to the EMS workers to determine any medical conditions when they arrive on scene. Smart911 is a company that wants to remedy that by storing any important critical care and emergency rescue information in an online database that is automatically available to emergency operators and first responders the minute you dial 9-1-1.

Here’s how it works: You enter whatever information you wish on the Smart911 website. This could include a photo of you or your child, bleeding disorder diagnosis, mobility limitations, allergies, and other emergency contact numbers. You will have to enter some required information including your first and last name and address, but generally you can decide what you would like to share. The service is free and the website that stores your information is certified secure by the Accredited Business Bureau and Norton Secured and is only made available to emergency operators after you have dialed 9-1-1.

It should be noted that hemophilia is not listed as an option under the website’s general medical categories, but there is a section that allows you to enter any additional conditions that should be noted. This is something that could be improved as the service grows and looks to its users for ways to make it more inclusive to various communities.

Smart911 is available in select counties for now, and maintains partnerships with county 9-1-1, police, and fire departments. Locations that have access to the service in Georgia so far include Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, and Dunwoody. If you would like to see Smart911 in your area, you can contact your local officials to determine if it’s something your county can benefit from.

Of course, you must decide ultimately what is best for you and your family members. This service is still growing and improving, but may ultimately provide a way for you to quickly communicate important medical information if an emergency occurs. You can learn more about Smart911 at the Sandy Springs EMS website or www.Smart911.com.
