Hemophilia of Georgia to Host Augusta Trot to Clot

Published May 13, 2015

Hemophilia of Georgia will host the Trot to Clot Walk and Run event on Saturday, May 30 at Savannah Rapids Park in Augusta.  This year, in addition to our 5k and 5 mile walk and runs we have added a 1 mile fun run for those who prefer shorter distances. This fun, family-centered event will raise money to fund Camp Wannaklot, the only camp in Georgia that provides children who have hemophilia or other inherited bleeding disorders the opportunity to enjoy a traditional camp experience.  During this fun-filled week, campers make new friends, learn about their bleeding disorders and share new experiences.

Register early to guarantee you will receive a Trot to Clot T-shirt.  Sign up today as a walker, runner or team.  Register before May 9 and save money.  Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners in each category, and the top individual fundraiser. Invite your family and friends to come out and cheer you on at this outstanding charity event.

Children who are born with severe hemophilia usually get three infusions of clotting factor medication every week.  That’s more than 2,500 infusions by the time they grow up at an average cost of $150,000 annually.  These children aren’t able to play contact sports like football because the risk of injury is too great.  But at Camp Wannaklot, held at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, GA, they can ride the giant swing, climb the rock wall, and go down the zip line under careful supervision of trained counselors.  It gives children with inherited bleeding disorders a special and safe place to spend part of their summer and to have fun. More importantly, the kids learn how to give themselves those infusions of clotting factor so they aren’t dependent on their parents or nurses to get the medication they need to stay healthy.

According to Kirstin Downie, Hemophilia of Georgia Director of Development, “participants in the Trot to Clot Walk and Run help to ensure that Camp Wannaklot will continue to offer kids who have bleeding disorders the opportunity to share new experiences, make new friends, and develop the skills they need to become independent. We hope to raise $20,000 for Camp Wannaklot through the Augusta Trot to Clot Walk and Run event this year.”

Hemophilia of Georgia thanks our presenting sponsors: Baxter International Inc., Bayer HealthCare, Biogen, CSL Behring, Emergent BioSolutions, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer. We would also like to thank Grifols and Octapharma for their sponsorship support.
