HoG Needs Assessment Findings

Published January 9, 2012

Horizons in Hemophilia, January 2012

By Karen Daniel, Marketing and Communications Director

Over the past few months, Community Evaluation Solutions, Inc. conducted a needs assessment study of Hemophilia of Georgia clients to find out how HoG could improve its programs and services for the bleeding disorder community.  More than 400 people participated in the study by attending a focus group interview, completing a written survey, or answering a survey over the telephone.

Overall, we learned that HoG clients are very satisfied with the services provided by HoG.  Outreach nursing and social work were rated as very important by the majority of the survey respondents and the majority of clients said they were very satisfied with the nursing and social work services provided.   The clients who use the HoG or Beacon pharmacy reported being very satisfied with the service they receive.

Many focus group participants and survey respondents reported that they would like more  help from Hemophilia of Georgia in finding medical and dental providers willing to treat patients who have bleeding disorders.  HoG is working on enhancing its existing medical and dental referral service in response to this need.  Clients who need help finding a physician or dentist should contact their HoG Outreach Nurse or Social Worker for assistance.

The needs assessment confirmed that many clients feel that networking with other people affected by bleeding disorders is very important.  The majority of survey respondents said they participate in HoG activities such as Camp Wannaklot, client dinners, and family camps and the majority of respondents said they are very satisfied with HoG’s activities and events.

We also learned that most clients prefer to receive communication from HoG via email or mail and that over half of the participants receive the newsletter.  Finally, more than half of the clients surveyed reported that they support HoG’s work in the bleeding disorder community by participating in fundraising or advocacy efforts; volunteering; or donating funds.

We thank everyone who participated in the needs assessment study. If you have suggestions for improvements in HoG programs and services or would like to find out about ways to get involved, please contact the staff at 770 518-8272 or mail@hog.org.  HoG and Beacon Pharmacy clients are also encouraged to complete the pharmacy evaluations at www.hog.org/survey and www.beaconpharmacy.net/survey.
