New Bike Under the Christmas Tree?

By Connie Knorr, CPhT, Pharmacy Purchasing Coordinator

Did someone get a bike for Christmas?  Bicycles, in-line skates, skateboards, and scooters can be dangerous without proper gear.  Next to motor vehicle-related injuries, bicycles injure more children than any other consumer product, according to the national SAFE KIDS campaign. The most common and serious injury is a head injury, and is the leading cause of death and disability.

Wearing a helmet during these activities should be a habit.  Helmets must properly and be fastened correctly.  A properly fitted and fastened helmet doesn't move around on the head.  It fits comfortably and snugly.  It sits in a level position and does not rock from side to side. To assure a good fit, take the head measurement one inch above the eyebrows. The helmet should have a hard-outer shell and absorbing liner at least on-half inch thick. According to SAFE KIDS, bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce head injury by as much as 85%.

Helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist pads are available at no charge from Hemophilia of Georgia for children and adults with bleeding disorders. Call our pharmacy to place your order. Be safe and have fun!
