Camp Wannaklot: We Had A Blast!

Camp Wannaklot 2023 was an exciting time for all as we celebrated 30 years of Camp Wannaklot with our weeklong theme, Party in the USA! Approximately 85 campers joined us to have a wonderful time, experience new adventures, make new friends, overcome fears, and learn about their bleeding disorder.

Inhibitor Risk Paper Informed by Genotyping Project
By The National Hemophilia Foundation
Between 2013-2017, the “My Life Our Future” (MLOF) project offered eligible individuals with hemophilia free genotyping, which is historically hard to access, expensive, and not covered by insurance. Conducted through the laboratory analysis of a single blood sample, genotyping can reveal the specific genetic mutation responsible for a patient’s disease such as those located in the factor VIII and factor IX genes in the case of hemophilia A (HA) and hemophilia B respectively.

We are delighted everyone had a great time while raising money for Camp Wannaklot to ensure youth with bleeding disorders are able to enjoy all the fun and adventure that camp brings to children's lives. It was wonderful to see children and their families out enjoying the fresh air, music, fun activities like face painting, cornhole, and balloon twisting.

UGA Students Row for Hemophilia Research
In June 2016, UGA students and avid rowers Jacob Pope '17 and Chris Lee '16 will be rowing 2,400 more, from California to Hawaii, in the Great Pacific Race. The campaign is called Row for Hemophilia and is designed to raise money and awareness for Hemophilia of Georgia (HoG). The UGA Alumni Association invited Jacob to guest blog about his upcoming adventure.

Locals hoping to hit the Pacific for race, raise awareness for hemophilia
Chris Lee and Jacob Pope, a pair of Cobb County natives, are attempting to enter the Great Pacific Race, which is described as “the biggest, baddest human endurance challenge on the planet." Hemophilia of Georgia Board of Directors Names Maria Pérez Manahan as CEO
The Hemophilia of Georgia Board of Directors announced on March 9, 2015 that it has appointed Maria Manahan as Chief Executive Officer. Maria will assume leadership of Hemophilia of Georgia on April 1, 2015 from current CEO, Trish Dominic, who is retiring after 30 years at the organization’s helm.

Dr. Stein Appointed to Emory Chair Named in His Honor
At Hemophilia of Georgia’s 40th anniversary celebration in March, 2013, CEO Trish Dominic announced that the agency had endowed the Sidney F. Stein, MD Chair in Hemophilia and Hemostasis at Emory University. On January 27, 2015, Dr. Stein was honored a second time for actually becoming the inaugural holder of the chair named for him.

Dr. Robert Sidonio joins the Emory/CHOA Bleeding Disorder Team
Ruth Brown and I had an opportunity to meet Dr. Robert Sidonio for lunch this past summer on a trip he made to Atlanta to be interviewed for the pediatric program at the Comprehensive Bleeding Disorder Center at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. When I think back upon our lunch together, I think of meeting a man passionate about his work, committed to continuing his research regarding women with bleeding disorders and excited about an opportunity to live and work in Atlanta.

FDA Approves Emory-developed Hemophilia Drug
Last month the Food and Drug Administration approved Obizur, a treatment for acquired hemophilia A that was originally developed by a research team led by Emory hematologist Pete Lollar, Hemophilia of Georgia Professor of Pediatrics.

Eloctate Now Approved
Biogen Idec announced on June 6 that the FDA approved Eloctate, their recombinant factor VIII product with a prolonged half-life. It will be commercially available for patients in mid-July. Eloctate is indicated in adults and children with hemophilia A for control and prevention of bleeding episodes, perioperative (surgical) management, and routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes.

Sponsored by Hemophilia of Georgia in partnership with the Atlanta Braves, the Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament is recognized as one of the premier charity golfing events in the United States. Since 1983 this tournament has raised more than $12 million for research for a cure for inherited bleeding disorders including hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease. Over the years treatment has improved but there is still no cure.

HoG Receives Grant From Speedway Children’s Charities
Hemophilia of Georgia received a grant from the Atlanta Chapter to Speedway Children's Charities, a nonprofit organization committed to raising funds to be distributed to qualified children's charitable organizations. The grant will be used for HoG's annual Adolescent Retreat which will be held in January 2010. Several HoG staff members and clients attended the Grant Distribution and Holiday Celebration at Atlanta Motor Speedway's infield Media Center on December 8, 2009.

Golf Tournament Raises Over $250,000 for Research
The 27th annual Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament sponsored by Hemophilia of Georgia raised more than $250,000 for research for a cure for inherited bleeding disorders. Over 225 golfers participated in the tournament on October 27, 2009 at Château Élan Resort and Winery in Braselton, Georgia.

Roswell High School Student Named Sprint Youth Community Champion
Roswell High School sophomore Austin Shaw was recognized as a Youth Community Champion by the Sprint Foundation at an awards ceremony on Monday, November 2, 2009. The Sprint Foundation awarded a $2500 grant to the non-profit organization of his choice, Hemophilia of Georgia.

Hemophilia of Georgia will host the 27th Annual Hit 'Em for Hemophilia Golf Tournament on October 27, 2009 at Château Élan Winery and Resort in Braselton, Georgia. Hundreds of corporate executives, local and sports celebrities, and invited guests are expected to participate in the tournament which also features an awards reception, live auction, and raffle.
